When we met at the door I told him hello and introduced Andrew to him, who he mistook as a friend of their daughter’s.

Their apologies wrapped around his mistake.

“I want to do everything with you,” he said one night.

What inner power held him in place with such ferocity that he’d make so declarative a statement?

They’d locked eyes, and it was like a whole life trajectory had come snapping into place. But David was still David.
