Among my favorites is the Tobias Wolff story In the Garden of North American Martyrs read by Jane Curtin. The Flannery O’Connor stories are also first rate (although sadly dated).

For twenty years people have told me that the Joyce Carol Oates story Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? is among the most frightening things they’ve ever read… but I still don’t get it. Please let me know in Comments which are your favorites.
I heard a reading once of one of Lovecraft’s stories that had had the audio warped so that it sounded like a broadcast from the early 20th century. It was a neat.
I remember enjoying the Oates story, not the most frightening thing I’ve read, but the image of that car has stuck with me since.
