Last week Maegan asked about a list of films I liked. Here’s a list of films I like just for the storytelling. It doesn’t include films I like primarily due to the music.
In no particular order, the films are:
Jesus of Montreal
Galaxy Quest
The Hunger
Alien
Sunset Boulevard
Cabaret
Let’s Scare Jessica to Death
Session 9
The Elephant Man
Rosemary’s Baby
Citizen Kane
Heavenly Creatures
Harold and Maude
Apparently, when they were done filming ‘Session 9’, the crew wrote “we did asbestos we could!” In the grime that lines the wall of the sewer tunnel. Wonder if it’s still there today.
“Sunset Blvd” is one of my all-time favorite films. There are so many layers to all the characters (even those with less screen time, like Max). Every time I watch, I get a new perspective on each of them. I feel like “The Big Lebowski” is another film that has a similar effect and you can formulate new theories about so many of the characters, too.
I’m a big fan of dark humor and this film is probably my earliest recollection of black, bleak humor tucked into a drama. (I like “Harold & Maude” for the same reason, although it veers more comedy.)
