I Think I Have to See This Movie on Saturday
The film is a bio-pic about Flannery O’Connor. Locally, the only showing is at Saturday, June 15th at the Tomorrow Theater in Portland. At 4:00 pm, a very not-glamorous time. Here’s the film’s trailer. Here’s the theater.
It’s interesting to see writers like Shirley Jackson get such decent treatment. Dare I hope to see a future bio-pic that does justice to the dark, unconventional mind of Emily Bronte? Poe and Lovecraft have gotten lots of legacy — for better or worse. It’s good to see Flannery O’Connor getting the attention.
As the New York Times put it:
She was not interested in writing tales of cheap redemption, or those that dramatize a change of heart that brings about a pasted-on happy ending, even if they’d have sold a lot better.
Is a Nathaneal West bio-pic waiting in the wings?
For those of us who’ve actually prayed for a good story idea or a good novel1… this looks like a good movie. I invite you to join me.
I do. I always have. I just do, and I won’t quibble about who answers those requests.
Hey Chuck,
What's your favorite Flannery O'Connor short story, and what would you teach from it if you had the time?
Have you read her letters? (Collected in a massive volume under the title "The Habit of Being".) She was such a fascinating person for so many reasons. I can't wait to see this movie, and I truly hope they do her justice.
