The idea of minimalism in music videos gets my mind jumping about our internet age. These days I find myself reading everything on my feeds to see what gets me to jump. I often find that the funniest or the most heartbreaking posts are often times a comment in the 1 hour youtube video I'm watching or a hilarious quip/jab on some article or idea. Youtube comments often have me roaring with laughter. Here is an example of some comments: lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aA7iq37cRoA . The brevity, focus and wit of some of these posts are so interesting to me.
After reading a short story to several sets of glazed over eyes a month ago, vertical finally clicked. In addition, the fact that its better to read to people who dont know what Im aiming for to be certain that they understand it from the story alone.
Also...the opening credits for the movie Seven by Kyle Cooper. They were groundbreaking. I remember everyone attempted to copy that gritty style and it was everywhere. It was like 3 minutes of film.
Dang. I’d love to make it, but March will be tight for me. Any chance we could do a paid zoom version? It sounds like a lot of fun. Also, what is your schedule for the Thursday class? I’ll be available later in the spring and would love to attend.
Ahhh this class sounds so awesome! I wish I lived in Portland just so I could attend, and in a movie theater to boot! How cool!
I’ve always loved music videos too. Growing up in rural Appalachia we had no TV channels, like really none, and def no cable TV, but my dad had a friend who lived in Maryland, who had the good TV.
So, a few times a year he would drive out west to us in West Va and bring us VHS tapes he recorded himself of MTV. This was in the mid-late 80s.
I lived for those tapes. Memorized them. My brother and I learned all the dances
He also brought us Star Trek the Next Generation, also recorded weekly off his own TV, but that was it. So, all I knew of the city world tv as a child was Star Trek and MTV. Kind of perfect.
My heart is racing. As often as I've seen the Mr. Brightside video or listened to the song, watching it on silent gave it a new dimension. Yes, Moulin Rouge, but wow. They did so much with the visual story. The apples, the chiaroscuro manipulation, body language, pacing. And I have a problem with prosopagnosia but I think they deliberately chose actors playing the Johns to look like Brandon Flowers, maybe to invoke his fantasy.
This sounds like a really fun topic! I have been diving into microfilm lately while helping a friend with a project. Every shot has to count. Every image and line of script has to add to the story in microfilm. I am curious how it compares to music videos now!
If folks have not been to a Chuck and Chelsea workshop. Do it!!! I had really good experience and learned quite a bit when I was a part of the last one.
Time to get out my Moulin Rouge! DVD this weekend for another watch. I love Baz's work!!!
I watched the music video a bunch when it first released, and the apples definitely weren't included in my memory of it. The more you watch the music video, the more those apples start showing up. Now I am wondering if there are any apples in Moulin Rouge! or if it was just in the music video.

So intriguing! I love the concept. Geographical distance bars me from entering the lottery - but I am excited to hear how it goes!
I used to watch music videos every morning while getting ready for school. There were certainly some interesting ones - including Mr. Brightside.
First music video that serves as a story that comes to mind is Eminem’s “Stan”
Second is Radiohead’s “Fake Plastic Trees”
Third (and possibly my favorite) is Basement’s Jaxx’s “Where’s your head at”
Blind Melon: No rain
Don Henley The Boys of Summer.

You owe Colton $500. ;)
Sir, once upon a time Madonna COULD dance. Now she just looks like she’s a marionette held together with gum and duct tape.
Where did Joe G. go? I miss Joe G.
And where did DeepArcher go? Feels like the earth swallowed his ass.
Yeah, that's what Cheap told me.

Loved this.
I'm so hungry for these writing lessons.

Are you willing to upload the class to YouTube for the rest of us to watch?
