Robert Paulson really should have gotten a lot more credit for his contributions to this film. It’s a shame he’s not recognized in Hollywood for the many hats he wore on this production.
After a night in Fight Club the whole world gets the volume turned down....
This is an excellent sign. After writing a few hours today I went to change pants before Study Hall. I thought, 'Geez, I'm getting hefty, here.' Then when I went to take a leak I found I'd pulled on new pants atop my current pair. I'm so far in the zone I'm just adding clothes atop clothes.
What are the different approaches you can take to ending a story? Are there any common mistakes to avoid?
Edit: I know you touched on this a bit in Consider This. I’m just wondering if there are some common approaches that we can take and also consider combining together. Please forgive me if you touched on this more than I remember. I do remember that one cliche to avoid is killing your main character at the end because your reader has to go on living.
Yes, please, avoid killing your character at the end. But my only rule regarding endings is that the story should end itself. You merely get it moving, and by the last third the story should have its own momentum and arrive at a place that surprises you. If you have an ending in mind, now, look at that as being the end of the second act -- where does the story go from there to a greater conclusion?
I hate how so many people on social media are so desperate for attention and validation and likes and views. They equate their self-worth with those trivial numbers. I don't understand it. Why do people think that?
Is an incredible recall necessary for a writer? Over and over I’m struck by your distinct examples from fiction to illustrate this point or that point. I find this difficult to do.
Don't sweat it. The more you do this the better you get at recognizing tricks. And the best ones stick in your memory because it's such a small joy to identify them. And the more respect you'll have for the writers who can still fool you.
Yeah seriously. Sometimes I’m listening to whatever podcast you’re doing and you pull some perfect example out of thin air and I feel very humbled and begin to accept that I’ll be very lucky if I can ever do that without just gargling up stuff I’ve heard somewhere else. Or you’ll just have some little story that comes out of nowhere and fits right in. You must go to an awful lot of parties. Maybe that helps.
“His name was Robert Paulson.” Rest In Peace, Meat Loaf. Man— what a rough year this is turning out to be. I give up. Loosing way too many family members, friends and people that enriched my life. I’m seriously done. This week has been hell for me—- I’ve got nothing left.
I cant process that I'd seen this and then a few hours later found out that Meat Loaf passed away. The world feels a little more empty right now. But I'll always have Robert Paulson.
So, the artist's name is Matt Taylor. @matttaylordraws on Instagram. Beautiful work.
Looks to me that the art should have been done by a...Robert Paulson. I mean...shit, he did everything else, look at those credits lol

Except for the producer Rober Paulson I guess…
Trying to move this post to "un-red"
Un-red...
I see what you did there lol
As long as you (and perhaps Chuck) aren't seeing red! ;)
As we'd say these days "you're on mute"

We're doing the same here (layering) because it's -15 @#$ degrees Fahrenheit. 😜
So you say you're a writer, eh?
BTW if you're still writing Fight Club, someone already snuck it off to the publisher. That ship has sailed.
Happy study hall.
PS As the saying goes, 2 pairs are better than none. ☺
Go Chuck!
Too much red. Okay, I like it. He is undoubtedly Matt. Yes, I cheated. Very cool illustration. Thanks for sharing.

Can you be more specific?
Interesting. Let me think on this. I like....
Cool. Have you ever changed an ending during the editing process? Have you ever come up with something even more fantastic?
“With a ‘My name is’ sticker over your mouth, the material stuck between your teeth, you only talk in vowels.”
“Da thurf ule ef thigh kub es...”

It's a trap that i admittedly fall for it too.. not gonna lie. Shallowness and narcisism are the 'big boy' values now.
Couldn’t tell you. My Facebook profile is a picture of an astronaut with pancakes for a head.
