In 2013, I left because I had been working 70+ hours per week for a year to pay for a shoebox to sleep in and finally hit the wall. If you dont make 7 figures, its not worth it. After 10 years in various major cities, and seeing how people reacted to the initial lockdown, I decided to move to a rural area and Im happy with that decision. Gained peace and quiet, cheap rent, and nature, but I also have to do a lot more driving. Plus if there is a major societal breakdown I can still feed myself. There is no utopia. Its always a trade off. I suggest getting the hell out of there.
In my opinion, it was very unnatural to be completely cut off from nature and to never have a quiet moment to myself. Plus its just too many bodies to be able to humanize everyone. Hate that. I want to be able to be empathetic toward those around me.
Im biased, but come to KY. Its dirt cheap and the landscape is gorgeous. Lexington is cheap and safe and has a southern/appalachian charm. Louisville is also cheap but not as safe. Rust belt town. Cincinnati is very similar but bigger.
Since I started copywriting from home and moved out to the country, it eliminated the vast majority of stress from my life. Never been happier. I still stay busy, but Im almost never rushed by other people. A+, 10/10, highly recommend getting off of the hamster wheel.
Appreciate the info, John. We will certainly check out Kentucky. Drove past the edge of the Blue Hills and vicinity a long time ago. Images are still fresh. Heard some good things about Tennesse as well. Thank you!
Tons of people escaped NYC to Nashville already. A friend from Denver just landed there. Have to visit soon. Hear good things about Knoxville too. There is no state income tax there, I believe. A friend wants to move there for that reason. It may not be state income tax, but there is a big tax break of some sort.
A few people we know are enjoying Nashville. South Dakota is on our radar as well. Not a fan of the weather there but no state tax and decent folks. As you know NY state/city taxes are at mugger levels. The NY overlords recently gave themselves a raise for part time work: $142k yr.
Hey Chuck, would you consider a story written in a dialect -- say such as Irvine Welsh’s use of Scottish dialect, for example -- to be considered burnt tongue?
Yeah, an extreme example. It doesn't take much burning to get the effect. Just get a few common phrases wrong. My story 'Eleanor' is the most burnt thing I've ever tried. Felt like I'd had a stroke.
I promise that when I’m done with school I’ll make the three hour trip to New York Story night. That is unless you’re going to set on up in Boston or Worcester.
The AI can't sign Chuck's disclaimer thingee so it better be disqualified from the cash prizes is all I gotta say.......my votes going to Randy anyhow. I'm flying in Monday to Boston so I'll see everyone at the next one!
Hot logo!! Kick-butt idea!! Randy, I screenprint shirts for a living— let me know if you need some for your event!! Or stickers! Good wishes everyone!! Few more days away from our Story Nights. ♥️🔥💀
I love it. New Logo-Same Great Attitude.
Great taste. Less filling.
I miss Brooklyn
How long has it been since you were here?
IMO—after 30 years of living here and trying to scrape out a living—this city has changed: definitely not for the better.

I'm sure they deserve every cent.
$142,000 per year for part time work, and cant be fired for being terrible at your job.
Come to the darkside. Shotguns and pickup trucks for everybody!
Sweet so Randy is going to dueling a ChatGPT AI for the title of best short story. Sounds interesting. Good Luck NYC Story Night.
is this going to be like Deep Blue versus Garry Kasparov?
Logo is fab. Looking forward to hearing the stories. 😊

That’s a perfect example! I can always recall certain misspelt/odd sentences from that short story -- “She be the fascist”.
I asked about Welsh and burnt language because I recently wrote a short story in the Scottish dialect like he uses and had a lot of fun with it.

I’ll be in class at the time of the event.
Please, don’t.
I’d send you a cake with a nail file baked into it in jail.
Thanks Randy!
Nice graphic. See you Monday.
